Kilka dni temu, będąc w podróży, miałem wreszcie czas, by dokończyć czytanie powieści „The Centurion’s Wife”, którą namierzyłem za darmo na Kindle. Autorkę, Janette Oke, kojarzyłem już wcześniej z innych dobrych powieści i dlatego zdecydowałem się zacząć czytać, bo sama okładka nie jest zbyt zachęcająca…
Historia ma kapitalne tło historyczne – ziemie Izraela, rzymska okupacja, czasy między śmiercią Jezusa a Zesłaniem Ducha Świętego. Alban, rzymski setnik, doświadcza mocy Jezusa, gdy ten uzdrawia jego sługę (to znamy z Ewangelii). Chce pozostać wiernym rzymskim dowódcą. Jego sytuacja komplikuje się, gdy dostaje zadanie, by stwierdzić, co się stało z ciałem Jezusa. Jednocześnie przeżywa oczekujące go małżeństwo z Leah, służącą z domu Piłata, której zlecono sprawdzenie, czy uczniowie Jezusa nie planują rewolty.
Łączące ich poszukiwanie prawdy sprawia, że wpadają w sieć intryg, niebezpiecznych przygód oraz… odkrywanie prawdziwego Boga.
